OUR INTERVIEW

What inspires you to write? I’m inspired to write by many things. After the death of my parents, my oldest sister and her husband took me into their home and raised me as if I was their own child. I’m grateful for the sacrifices they made for me. They picked up the mantle my parents had left behind and taught me about God’s love. They also lived a godly life in front of me. After graduating college, I married a Marine and traveled the United States. That’s where I first became aware that some people did not grow up in such a loving environment. It is a combination of my childhood and real-word experiences that inspire me to write about God’s love and how it can absolutely change our lives.

What makes your book(s)/writing special? I believe my books are part of my purpose here on earth. And if that is true, then that alone makes them special. It is humbling to know that God has a purpose for my life and that no one else can fulfill that purpose. God planted the seed for every book. God sends the readers and all glory belongs to Him. According to Psalms 138:8, the Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.

Tell us a little about your writing process? I begin with an outline which sets the framework the basic plot of the story. However, it is subject to change along the way. Once, the outline is complete, I create the scene and sequel of each plot point. Then it’s time to bring the story to life with setting, conflict, action and suspense.

How did your life as a writer begin? I was born into a family of writers. Two of my older siblings were writers before they went home to be with the Lord. My brother, BJ Mason, authored a couple of books. And my sister, Judi Ann Mason, was a playwriter and a television screenwriter. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t enjoy creating stories like my big brother and sister.

Where do you write? I like to write amongst the clutter at the desk in my home office. But you can also find me with my feet tucked under the covers in my bedroom late at night or at my favorite spot on the couch in the living room.

What is a snack you could not write without? I enjoy munching hot, buttery popcorn between writing scenes.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing? That a few classes and learn the craft of writing.

What helps you to keep going even when things are tough? I consider my writing to be my ministry. It is what God has gifted me to do. I don’t want to leave this world without accomplishing what God has created me to do. That belief keeps me going even when things are tough.

Are you working on a new book? Can you tell us a little about it? Yes, I am working on a new book. However, most of it is still in my head.

Can you tell us something that even your most loyal readers may not know about you? Most of my readers would be surprised to hear that my nickname is Cookie. Most of my childhood friends and family still call me by that name.

What’s next for you? I plan to venture out of my comfort zone and write a romance novel. Pray for me!
